September: “Ang layo pa ng December, maghintay muna tayo ng seat sale.”

November: “Bakit ang mahal na ng ticket pa-Japan?!”

December: “Wala na, cancel na lang.”

We’ve seen it dozens of times. Groups, families, even small barkadas — all waiting too long, hoping for a promo that never comes for their exact dates.

So let’s settle this once and for all.

When is the actual best time to book holiday flights from Manila to Japan or Korea?

Not “maybe.” Not “depende.” Here’s the data.

First: The golden window — 8 to 12 weeks before departure

For holiday travel (December 15 – January 5), airlines follow a predictable pattern:

The sweet spot for holiday group flights:
September 15 to October 15 (for December travel)

That’s 10–12 weeks before Christmas. Not earlier. Not later.

Second: Why booking “too early” is also a mistake

Counterintuitive, right?

But here’s what happens if you try to book in June or July for December:

• Airlines haven’t released their holiday group inventory yet

• You’ll be quoted “published fares” — much higher than group rates

• Seat sales during summer are for travel in Sept–Oct, not Dec

Real example:

A client asked us in July for a group of 8 to Seoul, December 20–27.

Airline quoted: ₱14,500 per person.

We advised them to wait until mid-September.

They came back in September. Same airline, same dates, same group size.

New quote: ₱9,200 per person.

They saved ₱42,400 total just by waiting 8 weeks.

So yes — there is such a thing as booking too early for holiday travel.

Third: The exception — peak holiday dates (Dec 20–Jan 2)

If your group absolutely must travel on these dates:

• December 20–25 (Christmas week)

• December 28 – January 2 (New Year week)

Then the rules change.

For peak dates, the “lowest” is still higher than off-peak. But September is still your best bet.

Typical peak holiday group fare (Manila to Seoul/Tokyo):
₱11,000 – ₱15,000 per person (vs ₱7,000–₱9,000 in off-peak)

That’s the holiday premium. Accept it or avoid the dates.

Fourth: What about seat sales? Do they ever cover December?

Rarely. And if they do, here’s the fine print:

Even when a “holiday seat sale” is announced:

• Only 10–20 seats per flight at promo price

• For groups? Almost impossible to get everyone on the same promo fare

• Taxes and fees add ₱2,000–₱3,000 to advertised price

Our honest advice:

Don’t wait for a December seat sale. It’s like waiting for a taxi during a typhoon — possible, but stressful and unlikely.

Book through a group desk in September. Lock the fare. Move on with your planning.
